On October the 25th 1992 at 7:00 pm 41 people met looking for a place to worship.
The meeting took place at the home of Clayton and Lillian Mitchell and it was decided that night that those 41 people would organize their own church. Mother Mitchell came up with name Holy Garden of Prayer and it was decided that would be the name of this newly organized church.
On November 1, 1992 we held the first service in a little house on Ridge Street that one of our members, Brother Mike Burton, had recently moved out of. We renovated that house by taking out some walls to make space to have service. Sunday School started that morning at 9:30 with 30 people in attendance. The lesson that morning was “In the Beginning” and came from Genesis 1:1-6 and was taught by Brother Theodore Macon. The message in service that morning was a talk also given by Brother Macon from Judges Chapter 15.
January 3, 1993 we unanimously elected our first pastor, Rev. Danny Rodgers. He served as our pastor from January of 1992 until his passing on May 25, 2002.
In just a little over a year we had outgrew our little house on Ridge Street and began looking for a more permanent home. Under the leadership of Pastor Rodgers, we purchased our present location on July 19, 1994 and began construction on our current sanctuary. Eight months later on March 16, 1995 we conducted our first service in our present sanctuary.
After the passing of Rev. Danny Rodgers, we were looking for another pastor, but God already had a ram in the bush. Rev Eric Tallie had been our musician for some time and on June 2, 2002 we elected him as the second pastor of Holy Garden of Prayer. Rev Tallie served as pastor until his departure on December 7, 2014. Under the leadership of Pastor Tallie we were able to pay off the church mortgage 10 years ahead of schedule.
After the departure of Pastor Tallie we again, we found ourselves in need of a shepherd and without fail, God provided yet again. Rev Ted Macon had been a lifetime member of Holy Garden of Prayer. He received his license to preach under Pastor Tallie and stepped up to serve as interim pastor in December of 2014 until he
was officially ordained as a minister in April of 2016 and unanimously elected and installed as the 3rd pastor of Holy Garden of Prayer Church on June 5, 2016.
Since Rev. Macon became pastor, the church has grown leaps and bounds. In the few short years he has served as our shepherd, we incorporated and received 501(c)3 status, we upgraded our sound system, added monitors in the sanctuary to assist with service and purchased a church van. In 2019 we undertook construction of the Leddie Baltimore Fellowship Hall, Lucritia Macon Administrative
Offices, the Lillian Mitchell Education Center and Mary Cozart Culinary Kitchen. This major construction project, which has been the vision of those ladies, was completed in 2020. We also remodeled the outside of the church with metal siding and a metal roof and added a steeple to the sanctuary. We remodeled the garage and have turned it into the Mary L Walker Youth Center and have acquired a park property in the Royal Lake community to be dedicated to the memory of Mother Josie Williams, upon its completion. In addition to all those accomplishments, we have added dozens of souls to the kingdom of God under the leadership of Pastor Macon.
Holy Garden of Prayer has enjoyed the favor of God all throughout
our history and we are confident that God is not done with us yet.
We look forward to continuing the work of building God’s
kingdom.
